Captain David I. Lyon Honored in Dedication Ceremony

29 September 2023

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey – Captain David Lyon was memorialized on 29 September 2023, his name the latest on a list of 12 heroes who adorn the stone walls outside of the Air Advisory Academy on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The Air Advisor Memorial Foundation worked for over a year, having to deal with slowdowns caused by COVID, to make this a reality.

“It was a solemn moment. You’re adding a name to the wall,” stated Robert Knipfer, the current president of the Air Advisor Memorial Foundation. “But, at the same time, you have a sense of accomplishment that you are able to honor a person who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Current Advisors came to pay their respects to Captain Lyon as well as the other brothers- and sisters-in-arms honored by the memorial. Shawn Buchholz was one of the current Air Advisors who assisted in the preparation of the ceremony and dedication of the plaques. “With all the hard work that our fellow Air Advisors poured into the beautification of the memorial and the foundation itself, it was an honor to be a part of the ceremony remembering those that are placed on the wall, that made the ultimate sacrifice, and knowing they will never be forgotten.”

The Ceremonial Bell was rung 11 times as the names of the fallen were read, as is tradtion when the fallen are recognized. This time, though, an additional 12th ring hung heavy in the air as it carried the name of Captain David Lyon with it for the first time.
