Captain David I. Lyon was a native of Sandpoint, Idaho graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2008 where he had excelled on the track and field team, earning the title of captain. He was also given the honor of a place National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American Team and landing a spot in the U.S. Air Force Academy shot put history. As a logistics readiness officer, Capt. Lyon was handpicked to be the group commander’s executive, a position more senior leaders vied to secure. He stood out with his kindness and compassion which he extended to everyone equally. Regarded as a “tender warrior” and “gentle giant” he earned respect from Airmen and people with ease, proving routinely that that respect was well placed.

Capt. Lyon was serving his nation in Afghanistan performing a combat advisory mission with Afghan National Army Commandos and working with the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan when a vehicle-born improvised explosive device was detonated near his convoy on 27 December 2013 in downtown Kabul, Afghanistan.

Captain David I. Lyon was survived by his wife, Dana.
