Captain Nathan J. Nylander was born in Fairbury, Illinois but moved in his youth to Texas where he graduated from Waller High School. Shortly afterwards, Capt. Nylander left for basic military training in 1994 and began his career in the Air Force as a radio and satellite data analyst. However, in 1998, he chose to cross-train into the weather career-field. Excelling at his job, as a Sergeant he was sent to officer training school where he graduated at the top of his class. He continued to win countless awards throughout his career. His dedication and drive led him to the path as an Advisor.
In 2011, Captain Nylander was serving as a flight commander with the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sadly, on the morning of 27 April 2011, a helicopter pilot for the Afghan Air Force pulled a pistol from his flight suit and opened fire, resulting in Capt. Nylander, seven other service members, and one civilian contractor being killed in the line of duty.
Captain Nathan J. Nylander was survived by his wife, Miriam, his two sons, Tyler and Andru, his daughter, Elisabeth, his father, Wendell, his mother, Mary, his two sisters, Nikki and Tara, his brother, Chris, and his grandmother, Mary Ellen.
Thank you, sir.
