Major Charles A. Ransom was born in Richmond, Virginia and came from a military family. In his youth, he was an outstanding athlete, playing both baseball and football through high school. He was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and succeed he did. All through childhood, he showed traits of a future leader, able to guide those around him with his charisma and confidence. After high school, Maj. Ransom attended the Virginia Military Institute, where he continued to excel and lead the way amongst his peers, culminating in his commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Air Force just a few months prior to 9/11. A cyber warrior, Maj. Ransom served to assure global cyber supremacy, carrying that into an advisor capacity.
In 2011, Maj. Ransom was deployed to the 738th Air Expeditionary Advisory Group in Kandahar, Afghanistan as an advisor to Afghan communications professionals. On a TDY during this deployment to, he reported to the Air Command and Control Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sadly, on the morning of 27 April 2011, a helicopter pilot for the Afghan Air Force pulled a pistol from his flight suit and opened fire, resulting in Maj. Ransom, seven other service members, and one civilian contractor being killed in the line of duty.
Major Charles A. Ransom was survived by his fiancée, Naquita, his father, Sergeant Major Willie Ransom (ret.), his mother, Marysue, and his brother, Chief Petty Officer Stephen Ransom (ret.).
