Major William “Brian” Downs K.I.A. 30 May 2005

Major William Downs, better known to his friends and family as Brian, earned his Air Force commission in 1988. In 1999, Maj Downs left active duty to fly for US Airways. After 9/11, with the furlough of many airline pilots, he returned to active duty.

On 30 May 2005, while serving as an Air Advisor, Maj Downs was surveying a landing zone about 80 miles north of Baghdad, Iraq when his plane crashed, resulting in his death. He is survived by his wife, Beth, and his three children, Bailey, Elle, and Chandler. Beth would like Brian to be remembered by this beautiful sentiment she provided the AAMF:

“There is a lot written about what a great friend, church member, and leader he was, but he was so much more.  Brian was a very loving, encouraging, and supportive husband. He was such an involved and dedicated father – and so much fun.  Everyone who knew him knew just how much he valued them as individuals. He was a great listener and so intentional about his interactions with people. Brian was gregarious and had an infectious laugh. He would speak to anyone and make them feel like they were the only person in the room – focused and genuine. He was humble and respectful of everyone. Brian was passionate about his faith and serving God, and wasn’t afraid of shaking things up and not settling for the status quo. He was an advocate for the defenseless and vulnerable. He had a great zeal for life and didn’t waste a moment of the 40 years he was given.”

Thank you, sir.
